Theo MacLeod wasn’t supposed to be the one.
Tall, dark and handsome suits me just fine, but the cocky grin, know-it-all attitude, and mammoth ego? No thanks. I only hired him so I wouldn’t have to sit at the singles table again. It was just pretend.
He wasn’t supposed to kiss me.
My heart wasn’t supposed to pound.
We weren’t supposed to spend the night together—the hottest night of my life.
One night turns into a snowed-in weekend away, and even the blizzard of the century can’t cool the fire between us. I can’t get enough—of his smile, of his body, of the way he makes me feel.
We’re nothing alike. He’s a daredevil, and I’m a nervous Nellie. He’s a drifter, and I want to put down roots. He’s an opportunist with a checkered past, and I’m a Girl Scout volunteer.
But none of it matters when I’m in his arms.
I know he’s made mistakes. I know his wounds are deep, and he doesn’t trust easily. I know he doesn’t believe he could ever be enough to make me happy, but he could.
All he has to do is stay
Pour a glass of wine, craw underneath a blanket, and fall in love with your new book-boyfriend, because this will satisfy your romance taste buds. If You Were Mine, was my second read from Melanie Harlow’s books. She has a way of writing a story that feels authentic with a hint of pleasure. Sometimes themes can be elaborate, but we can somehow relate to them. Now, if it was possible to find a man that looks like Theo for rental services, I am down! (Sorry Hubby). This page-turner was devoured just like a jar of Nutella on cheat day, yummy with no regrets.
We’ve all been there, when we’re the single person in the group filled with all friends that are getting married. They practically quarantine you to the table of rejects than with the friends who are happily in love. For Claire, she didn’t want to be categories in that type of group, so what does any normal person do when it comes to this outcome? Look online if there is a service for rent-a-boyfriend (I was curious if it’s a real thing…turns out it is. Who knew). So after drinking a whole lot of wine and scanning through Hotties4Hire, Claire managed to find the man that will fit perfect as her guest while letting her intoxication take over her. Just curious, but shouldn’t there be a law that forbids you from “drinking and emailing, texting, calling, driving,” etc?
Insert extremely hot man here! Theo is the definition of no strings attach. He is a mysterious character, filled with darkness that you will want to indulge in. He is clearly all business and no pleasure, but when Claire enters in his life—it sparks something in his icy heart. What was attractive about him (outside from his devilish looks), was this man wasn’t anything you expected. There was a reason why he resorted to such job than to have a life to share with a special person. He was never driven to have a connection with someone. His past haunted him, which only gave his narrative of his life as something meaningless than being fulfilled, like having a family.
The igniting of flames occurred for these two characters, sending you in a loop of being addicted to their chemistry. As much as it started off as Claire’s story, I felt that the message behind the theme was from Theo’s life. How relationships can sometimes be worth it, but we have to take a leap of faith. It was sexy, it was driven, and most of all these characters took a risk. Not saying Theo was perfect, he was far from it. He emotionally devastated Claire at certain parts. I was not happy about that! In fact, I think I cursed and told him to hit the road (I played You Keep Me Hanging On, for my withdraw of Theo).
These characters undergo a discovery of their own self, seeing the possibilities of being happy. As much as there was romance, each character builds each other up with each other’s own strength. They see their trueness, the undouble qualities that never lets them fall in despair, even if they believe they didn’t have the possibilities. I had fallen in love with Theo, like everyone else who had read this story. Hopefully, you will fall into these character’s love. Melanie Harlow managed to press the button for emotions and let you fall down a path filled with tears and lust. This love story was truly passionate and the way it was beautifully crafted, made me want to scream to the Heavens over how perfect it was.
